Hi everyone! So glad you’ve decided to check out our little blog. We decided to start this blog as a way to reach out, help and inspire others to learn some of the life lessons and skills that the rural way of life has taught us. This blog is going to be kinda a combined effort between my mom Doris and myself. It should be tons of fun!
I’m Jessie Saul. My husband Wayne and I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere Oregon. The same small town we both were born and raised in. We have two little country girls who keep us on our toes. The life I live is pretty quiet but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. As a family, we enjoy camping, traveling, hunting, Sunday Funday in the Razor and really anything outdoors. When I’m not working or being a mommy I spend my time finding and repurposing old junk, DIY projects, cooking, cake decorating and this last summer I even tried my hand at a garden. Honestly, I’m still learning so many things. I thought this would be a fun way for myself to continue to learn a few things and document them along the way. My mom Doris is really the one with all the life experience and knowledge. I’ll just be bringing all the info to you guys. I can’t wait to get to know all of you!
Hello everyone, My name is Doris Harper. I’m the mom here at Home with the Harper’s. My daughter Jessie and I have been encouraged by friends and family to write this blog. I hope this gives us a chance to document and share some of our crazy projects, recipes, lessons and all the fun along the way.
I grew up in a large family of eleven children. We lived on a farm in northeast South Dakota. Later moving to Minnesota. Coming from a large family I was exposed to many different subjects and projects. We all worked together on things such as leatherwork, sewing, quilting, gardening, canning and raising and butchering our own meat and animals. As you can imagine with such a large family I am pretty good at cooking for large crowds.
After I graduated from high school I went to visit my sister who was in Germany at the time, (her husband was stationed there). While I worked in Germany I met my husband John who was also stationed there. After we were married we made a home in the small Eastern Oregon town John was born and raised in. This is where we still reside and have raised all five of our children.
We bought our first home about a year after we were married. It was not very luxurious but we made it work, we did all our own remodeling of this home. After it was fixed up we sold it and moved to a home with a few acres out of town. Of course, this home was in need of a ton of work, which we have managed to accomplish over the years.
We have five children three girls, and two boys. Our children are somewhat spread out in age. From our oldest to the youngest is a 16-year span. We also now have six grandchildren. At the time I’m writing this we have been married 37 years- I can’t even believe that!
Over the years I have had an in-home daycare. I then was the co-owner and manager of a health food store for 17 years. I then decided I would like to try something different and sold my half of the business. I became a certified nursing assistant to see if it would be something I would enjoy. When I came to realize it was something I was passionate about I started down to the road to become a registered nurse. At the age of 50, I graduated from nursing school and received my RN.
This brings me to the present. I am currently a surgical nurse and also do travel nursing in different departments. Because of all my many skills and hobbies, some of our friends and family have encouraged Jessie and to bring you all this blog. I hope you all enjoy it and it helps you to grow in your own life.
Thank you for spending your valuable time with us!
